Building Literacy

  • Foundational Skills
  • Phonological Awareness

What? Phonological awareness is a set of skills that involve oral language. More...Less

In this broad umbrella of skills, students learn how to identify and manipulate sounds they hear. Some of these skills include rhyming, clapping out syllables, and identifying individual sounds in words.

When? Phonological awareness are sets of skills that develop over time in a progression and are crucial to successful reading and writing. More...Less

Phonological awareness instruction should start as early as preschool and should be mastered by first grade.

How to teach: Phonological awareness is considered an umbrella of spoken skills such as rhyming, words in a sentence, syllables in a word, onsets and rimes in a word and finally, phonemic awareness, which is the ability to manipulate individual phonemes in a word. More...Less

This is taught in whole group through shared reading and writing and in small group through guided reading lessons. Students can practice these skills independently once they have been explicitly taught.

Play to learn: In Rhyme & Climb, students hear a word and see a picture that represents that word. More...Less

They are then given a word with a matching picture and the students have to determine whether the words rhyme. If they rhyme, the students select the green thumbs up sign and if they do not rhyme the students select the red thumbs down sign. Students receive immediate feedback and are encouraged to keep trying until they identify a word that rhymes. As students get the rhymes correct, they earn cheese for the mouse to eat and allow him to progress up the ladder.

Teaching Tip: Rhyme & Climb's audio and visual component is perfect for English Language Learners (ELLs) and students learning phonological awareness. Teachers can assign this game during literacy centers or for spelling homework.
