Learning activities and games are engaging ways for students to interact, play and practice their spelling and vocabulary words. Students at all grade levels benefit from multiple exposures, spaced practice, and playing with words.

How to teach: It is important that spelling patterns and vocabulary words be taught in a way that help students find patterns in the words and make generalizations that will help them figure out unfamiliar words. These skills then become strategies that help students when reading and writing.

Play to learn: Playing Crossword, students read the sentence clues on the right and type the word missing from each in the puzzle squares that correspond to the clue number. More...Less

Students can click the “Hint” button to be given one letter of the missing word, but this adds time to their score. If they type an incorrect letter, the box turns red so they can try again. When the students finish entering all of the words correctly, they click Submit to see their time.

Teaching Tip: Crossword encourages healthy competition between students as they try to be first to complete the puzzle while learning their vocabulary and spelling words. Students can play this game online or teachers can print a paper version.
