What? When students are given multiple opportunities to retrieve or recall information, forgetting the information is less likely. More...Less

This idea is particularly important when learning spelling, phonics and foundational reading skills because these build automaticity and fluency. When students are able to accurately and fluently recognize and apply spelling patterns, that ability will assist them with decoding and encoding words.

When? Teaching students to look for spelling patterns they can recognize and apply is a strategy that we teach from the moment students enter kindergarten and start learning the alphabet and letter/sound correspondence. More...Less

This basic but important foundational skill can be taught and reinforced during whole group, small group, and independent practice. Although typically taught in an ELA block, spelling can be practiced throughout the day since multiple exposures get words into students’ long-term memory.

How to teach: To supplement teachers’ direct instruction and make spelling practice and review fun, let VocabularySpellingCity create independent spelling practice using the interactive learning activity Test-N-Teach. More...Less

Once teachers create or import a word list, students can play during literacy centers or for spelling homework. This learning activity can also be used as a review before a test or to continue to keep the words in the learning environment.

Play to learn: In Test-N-Teach, students practice spelling after hearing the words in context-rich sentences. More...Less

If students misspell a word, they are given another chance and a little help until they get it right. Incorrect words are added to the end of the game to give students another review opportunity. They can hear the word and the context-rich sentence again with the click of a button, making this game a favorite of emergent readers and English Language Learners (ELLs). Test-N-Teach is an explosively exciting way to practice your spelling words for weekly spelling tests!

Teaching Tip: Test-N-Teach is a great way to get students to practice for spelling assessments because not only does it test students’ knowledge, it corrects errors. More...Less

Missed words are reviewed and mistakes are immediately corrected, so students are not left with misconceptions. Students are required to try the word again later in the game. This is a great activity for ELLs and learners who struggle with spelling, because words are read to students. The fuse on the TNT grows shorter with each correct answer. When all words have been spelled correctly, the ignited TNT will carve a monument to good spelling into the side of Mount Spellmore!
