This idea is particularly important when learning spelling, phonics and foundational reading skills because these build automaticity and fluency. When students are able to accurately and fluently recognize and apply spelling patterns, that ability will assist them with decoding and encoding words.

Missed words are reviewed and mistakes are immediately corrected, so students are not left with misconceptions. Students are required to try the word again later in the game. This is a great activity for ELLs and learners who struggle with spelling, because words are read to students. The fuse on the TNT grows shorter with each correct answer. When all words have been spelled correctly, the ignited TNT will carve a monument to good spelling into the side of Mount Spellmore!
