What? From writing a report to writing a grocery list, spelling is a foundational skill used in everyday life. Spelling is often part of writing instruction, and is also a key component of reading proficiency. Therefore, it is essential for students to engage in spelling practice.

Kindergarten students learn to spell words that follow basic spelling patterns, like CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, as well as words that do not follow phonetic patterns, like sight words. Throughout elementary school, students study increasingly difficult phonetic patterns in order to achieve spelling mastery.
How to teach: To make spelling instruction fun, students can independently practice spelling using interactive learning activity Splat-N-Spell. Teachers can assign this game during literacy centers or for spelling homework.
Play to learn: In Splat-N-Spell, students will hear the word read aloud and in context. More...Less
Students must “splat” the insects with the correct letters and then drag the letters to the top of the page to spell the word. At the bottom of the page, students can click to hear the word read aloud again. Students can also click the “Sentence” button to hear the word read in a sentence. Immediate feedback is provided if students misspell the word. Once students spell the word correctly, they may move on to the next word. Older students can "splat" the letters in the word out of order, and then drag them into their correct order to spell the assigned word.
Teaching Tip: The audio feature of Splat-N-Spell is perfect for English Language Learners (ELLs). When ELLs “splat” the insect, they will hear the letter read aloud and can review the English alphabet.
