Types of Nouns

Common nouns are nouns that do not name a particular person, place, or thing.

Proper nouns name a specific person, place, or thing and are almost always capitalized. People’s names are proper nouns, as are the names of states, streets, rivers, oceans, countries, companies, institutions, churches, etc.

Plural nouns name more than one person, animal, place, thing, or idea.

Collective nouns refer to groups of people, animals, or things.

Possessive nouns show that someone (or something) owns an item.
