For young students, extending the counting sequence past 9 into double digits is still a matter of memorizing each number’s name and written representation. But as students learn that each number represents a concrete value, teaching place values helps them to see that each digit within the number denotes a discrete amount as well. From first to fifth grade, the elementary school math curriculum introduces place values sequentially, starting at ones and tens, building to hundred-thousands. Moving into the decimal positions, fifth graders expand their understanding of place values into the tenths and hundredths. Read MoreRead Less

Math Word Lists

The math vocabulary lists are based on the Common Core Elementary Math Standards. VocabularySpellingCity has selected the elementary math words that apply to the key math concepts and written level-appropriate elementary math definitions combined with meaningful example sentences. Elementary students can use these materials for reinforcement to build understanding or assessment. Teachers can import the lists into their account and then edit or extend the lists for their own purposes.

Reinforcing the associated math vocabulary through VocabularySpellingCity’s online resources allows teachers to bridge the gap between concept and language. As students become familiar with the math words, the teacher’s focus can turn to applying operations and developing number sense with multi-digit numbers. A conceptual grasp of numeral place values is the foundation on which fractions, decimals, exponents, and the metric system of measurement are built. Based on the Common Core State Standards, the math vocabulary lists below help students succeed in number and operations in base ten.
