5th	Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.

For young students, extending the counting sequence past 9 into double digits is still a matter of memorizing each number’s name and written representation. But as students learn that each number represents a concrete value, teaching place values helps them to see that each digit within the number denotes a discrete amount as well.
